Last week, four sixth year James Hamilton Academy pupils; Kirsty Anderson, Jennifer Clunie, Amy Gardiner and Heather Lochery, visited Des Browne MP in the House of Commons as part of their Higher Personal Development course. The group of four 17 year olds arranged the visit to discuss their project on youth employment with Des and to discover more about how parliament works. Teacher Fiona Montgomery said: "As part of their Higher Personal Development the girls contacted Des Browne to gain his opinions on the minimum wage and employment rights and responsibilities of under 18s. • EMERGENCY JOB SUMMIT FORCES SNP TO FOCUS ON AYRSHIRE 4 MAR '10
Following the Labour UK Government’s emergency Ayrshire Jobs Summit at Kilmarnock College last week, the SNP have announced they will hold a similar event on 15 March 2010 at Grange Academy, Kilmarnock. Des said: “The SNP’s Jim Mather the Minister responsible for economic development in Scotland does not seem to prioritise Ayrshire without the pressure of the UK’s Labour Government. It is only after the emergency summit in Kilmarnock College last week, he has eventually set a date for a similar event; an event he promised this area last year. “I’m glad the SNP are finally taking Labour’s lead to...

Cathy Jamieson said: “These significant new measures are about supporting workers who have been damaged during their working lives. I am pleased that this announcement...
  • KILMARNOCK COLLEGE GET BEST REPORT FOR A DECADE 27 FEB '10
"Kilmarnock College received the best Inspection Report it has had for a decade. I congratulate the new Principal, Heather Dunk, the Management, the staff and students on the progress they have made over the last 13 months. The politicians and community leaders and business people present were able to see for themselves the improvement in the college environment. In my conversations with students, their enthusiasm and hard work was infectious. And the buffet lunch provided by the catering students in the Gallery was delicious and professionally served. Well done, Kilmarnock College, go to the top of the class." Des said....
  • AYRSHIRE'S JOB SUMMIT A SUCCESS 26 FEB '10
Local Labour politicians have welcomed the initiative of the Scotland Office in organising last week's Ayrshire Jobs summit, held in Kilmarnock College. The event was attended by politicians from across Ayrshire, as well as a number of public agencies. Speaking after the summit Cathy Jamieson said: "The Summit was a useful opportunity to look at how we can work together to create new jobs as well as protect existing jobs. There was agreement that we must do everything we can to create job opportunities for young people, and that the Future Jobs Fund is already a success. Participants put forward...

  • SAVE OUR SURGERY 15 FEB '10
Des and Cathy have joined forces with Councillor Maureen McKay, the Leader of the Labour Group in East Ayrshire, to fight the proposed closure of the GP surgery at Northwest Kilmarnock Area Centre. The politicians were shocked to discover that on 9 February, the NHS Ayrshire & Arran Executive Directors took a decision which could lead to the closure of the GP service in North West Kilmarnock. This secret decision only came to light because Dr Irvine and Partners copied Maureen McKay into the Doctors letter to the Health Board demanding reconsideration of the closure. Cllr Maureen McKay said:...
  • DES AND CATHY CALL FOR NO MORE NURSERY CUTS 14 FEB '10
Des and Cathy Jamieson MSP, along with Labour Councillor, Maureen McKay, are demanding that the SNP/Tory East Ayrshire Council come clean about their plans for nursery provision. The budget the SNP/Tory coalition forced through requires a review of nursery provision. That review is causing panic among parents across East Ayrshire because they fear closure of nurseries. The Labour trio's e-mail and phones are red-hot with worried parents. In response, council officials tell them that they shouldn't be concerned "at this time". The Labour politicians believe that parents should be worried. And that they have been given false assurances to...
