Last week's Sunday Post reported that I claimed for reprogramming door chimes:
"Des Browne, meanwhile, asked taxpayers to stump up £47 for a security firm to programme his electronic front door chime."
The fact is the £47 was spent on reprogramming the alarm system in my constituency office. This was a matter, not of musical taste or for my home, but of practicality and for the safety for my staff. In 2000 following the death Andrew Pennington, the MP's assistant who was stabbed in a constituency office, the police recommended the installation of a door chime system in my office. The reprogramming of the office front door chime allows staff upstairs to be alerted when someone comes into the building and was also done on police advice.
I told the Sunday Post this but they did not manage the find the space in their paper to add my explanation to the article.
